Café Diaries #7: Grindsmith

Processed with VSCO with c8 presetIt wasn’t until the last couple of days that I really thought about ‘What makes an independent café, independent?’ It sounds like an easy question to answer but I beg to differ.  At first what made an independent coffee shop independent to me was the idea that it does not exist anywhere else unlike Starbucks and Costa.  Thus, it is not franchised.  However, I decided to return to Grindsmith for the second time and I then discovered they have a cafe in Deansgate, Media City and ‘The Pod’ in Greengate Square.  So is Grindsmith an independent café?  Yes, I see it as an independent chain unique to manchester.

Grindsmith in Deansgate is a cool café that is close to lots of other nice bars, restaurants and the AMC cinema.  One of the best things about this café is the layout and interior because all of the seating areas are spaced out so there are little areas which can only seat a certain number of people which allows for privacy and intimacy.

There is a great range of food, coffee of course and soft drinks as well as alcohol for the evening.  Grindsmith also sells some books about coffee, tote bags and other merchandise.

The ambience is always relaxed even when it’s busy and it just feels homely.  This is one of the best cafés in the area.
